hurricane

Rita's headed right for Houston. My mom lives in Houston. It's too late for her to get out -- the highways are too congested and there's no gas left. Fortunately, she's not in one of mandatory evacuation areas, and most of her neighbors are staying. Still, no one knows what to expect. Weather service is saying downtown Houston could experience up to 120 mph winds. I read somewhere that the building codes only require that buildings be able to withstand winds of around 100 mph. Please direct any surplus positive vibes toward the Texas coast . . .

sending vibes....

has she been through a hurricane before? I've been through several. does she have the right supplies? too late now, but, just in case:

--fill bathtubs with water
--have candles, matches, flashlights, batteries in a central location
--she needs a battery operated radio
--move furniture away from windows to center of rooms
--tape windows if possible
--precook perishables (meat etc) since power will likely be out for several days or more

Thanks so much, Jodi -- your vibes are much appreciated -- and perhaps doing some good. For the time being, it looks like the situation isn't as dire as predicted . . .

My mom and I had a long talk about the water -- it started out as something like this:

Me: "Do you have enough water?"
Mom: "I've got a lot of water."
Me: "How much?"
Mom: "I think it's about a gallon or so."

Oh dear. I managed to talk her into filling the bathtub as well as various pots. I think she's got enough now . . .

Thanks very much for your list -- I'll pass it on to her after this over. With the oceans heating up, this probably won't be the last big one . . .

btw, on taping the windows -- i've heard it said that one should tape in X's (or diamonds, depending on whether you're focusing on the tape or on the window). Is this true? Would some other pattern (e.g., a square grid rather than a diamond grid) work just as well?
