this time tommorrow

I'll be sleepling (hopefully) in a hotel in Reston, VA. Thank God I'll be back in SF after two days. Reston one of the most horrible places I've ever been spent time in. Nothing but corporate HQ's, hotels, and chain restaurants like Chile, Chipotle, etc. For miles and miles. There's literally nothing else. The whole thing feels like an gargantuan Tativille that thinks it's a real city.

I've been there (Reston), you're accurate in the description... too accurate, I fear. Hurry back west, you'll feel better here. Love your stuff, thanks!

I don't know about Reston, but I've been to other parts of Virginia, closer to D.C., and the area seems to be populated by control freaks. All the houses look the same (pink brick), all the churches look the same, and there's a church on the corner, every 3 blocks. If you don't own a house there, then you probably live in one of those controlled townhouse communities, where you are threatened with a lawsuit (as was my cousin) if your shutters are the wrong color of red, white or blue.

Thanks, edison! It was almost worth it given how wonderful it felt to step off of the plane in Oakland. Your blog is off to a great start, by the way.

Jean, you describe the social climate disturbingly well! Add the Vegas-like "I'm gonna get rich real quick now fast as I can no matter what I gotta do" glee of corporate business men and women as they get sloshed on company-purchased bar tabs in the lounges of hundreds of identical luxury hotels, and you've got the rest of the picture. The place really does feel like a slower, more "business"-oriented version of Vegas . . .

I can totally see the lawsuit scenario - ownership is just another way of growing wealth, after all, and if someone does something to "my" property that reduces its value . . . he or she might as well have stolen cash right out of my hand. Ick! Of course I'm just guessing at the base and corrupt line of thinking that would lead one to file a lawsuit over shutter color. Undoubtedly there are many such lines of thinking slithering about Reston and neighboring towns.

I do hope your cousin made it through the lawsuit relatively unscathed!
